RAMSAY BRYCE

RIBA Part II Architectural Assistant

BIOGRAPHY

My mixed heritage has broadened my understanding of architecture. My exposure to Scottish and Spanish climactic and typological approaches has been extremely beneficial to my growth and appreciation of the built environment. The additional advantage in dealing with two perspectives of architecture, geography, politics, history, and culture, is that I have a more rational and balanced methodology to everything I think about and conceive which in turn allows me to proficiently conceptualise projects.

Having been taken to many  historical sites as a child, traditional forms of architecture is what initially drew me towards art and architecture. My focus on architectural history allows me to better understand what came before, which in turn has aided me in understanding what is going on now and what should come next. Moreover, my fascination with load-bearing masonry and its structural forms inspires my designs; every new project presents challenges that I love to convert into opportunities for self-criticism so that I can learn and grow as an architect.

I gained my qualification as a Part 1 Architectural Assistant from the University of Edinburgh and I completed the Part 2 qualification at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. My education has afforded me with experience in two very different cities. Edinburgh, where architecture must complement the established ornate beauty with careful restrictions to height and boundaries, with an emphasis on contextualisation; and Glasgow; a city less limited due to its contrasting styles. This has prepared me with the knowledge to approach a wide variety of projects in different scales and effectively tailor a response to the relevant challenges.
